Set-up/Programmer

Summary

Under the supervision of the Cell Leader and VP/Manufacturing, the experienced machinist is responsible for the set-up, programming and overall operation of a variety of lathes/mills to manufacture parts. Set-up equipment and fixtures in turning department over a wide range of surfaces, diameters and depths and keep close tolerances according to blueprints/diagrams. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals; a certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. May direct and lead the work of others.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

Read and interpret blueprint specifications to determine procedures and operations sequences.

Perform all set-up conditions and make offset adjustments to operate machine tools with no supervision.

Operate various tools and machine tools to make finish adjustments to parts.

Identify and troubleshoot operating, material and tooling problems.

Perform general preventative maintenance work on tools.

Assist co-workers on correct procedures.

Set-up and edit existing programs as required, and operate equipment as assigned.

Maintain accuracy in production and tooling.

May set-up and operate one or more automatic numerical control machines as assigned.

Must have a complete set of machinist tools. All special tools, precision measuring instruments and equipment are furnished.

Proper care and use of machine, material and equipment as well as follow instructions.

Familiar with characteristics of various metals.

Arrange, mount and secure tooling.

Mount, align and secure holding fixtures or locate, support and secure work piece in absence of fixturing.

Set stops; calibrate fixturing to appropriate reference points.

Cycle machine through operation sequence to check fixture and work positions, tooling, clearances, speeds, feeds, etc.

Make appropriate adjustments to correct deviations from program specifications.

Recognize, correct or report errors.

Use of precision measuring devices to set-up and adjust work and verify conformance of work to specifications.

Visually and physically examine the surface of parts for defects.

Completes any and all paperwork as required; Job Traveler, VISTA, etc.

Follow all clean up and housekeeping procedures.

Comply with all quality and safety regulations and procedures.

Qualifications

Basic or Strong reading, writing and math skills.

Knowledge or Strong knowledge of technical GD&T drawing reading skills.

Must be able to understand quality standards and gauging.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift up to 10 pounds intermittently.

Ability to stand 100% of work day; occasionally bend or twist.
